Do You Know the Mollusk Man?
As part of the curriculum for Carnegie Mellon’s Professional Writing program, I, along with my fellow graduate students, completed a Professional and Technical Writing class. The course introduced students to multiple forms and practices of professional writing, including technical writing, literary journalism/feature writing, scientific accommodation, healthcare communications, organizational communications, and instructional documentation. Students in the class first learned about key components of each form of writing, then completed assignments to practice the skills associated with writing.
For the literary journalism/feature writing assignment, students needed to interview an individual associated with the Carnegie Mellon community and capture their character while describing their work. A mark of success for this assignment is being able to figuratively put the reader in front of the subject of the article—students had to bring depth to the subject by presenting a three-dimensional personality and articulating their subject’s passions in a way that every reader can relate to.
To complete this assignment, I interviewed Dr. Timothy Pearce, a malacologist (mollusk expert) at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History to learn more about his work and help others learn more about a topic that they might not think of every day.

Valdosta Brings PRIDE to LGBTQ Community
When I attended Valdosta State University, I spent part of my time working as a staff writer for the college newspaper, The Spectator. I focused primarily on feature stories, and one of the events I wrote about for the university population was the annual PRIDE celebration, which VSU’s Gay-Straight Alliance was participating in.

Smokin’ Aces Brings Something New to Valdosta
When I attended Valdosta State University, I spent part of my time working as a staff writer for the college newspaper, The Spectator. I focused primarily on feature stories, which could highlight both on-campus events and off-campus points of interest. I learned that Valdosta, GA, was going to get its very first hookah bar in 20210, and Smokin’ Aces opened for business a week before this article was written.

As part of my internship for literary agency Harvey Klinger, I completed reader reports for my supervisor. When an agent asks for an author’s manuscript, they typically need an intern to write up a synopsis and review to help determine how viable the manuscript is for publication. Based on the reader report, the agent will then decide whether or not to offer representation for the author.

This piece of fiction is part of a short story collection I’ve been developing, which takes a look at the relationship between humanity and the natural world, both through direct interactions and through attempts at classification.
